Federalist Society Welcomes Dean James Huffman to Discuss "Free Market Environmentalism"

February 15, 2005

On February 10th, the Federalist Society welcomed Professor James Huffman to the chapter to discuss 'Free Market Environmentalism.' James Huffman is the current Dean of Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. Dean Huffman, also a professor at Lewis and Clark since 1973, has taught a myriad of subjects ranging from constitutional law to natural resources. In addition, he is the author of more than 100 articles on a variety of such subjects.

During the noon event, Dean Huffman contrasted the orthodox environmentalist perspective with a market-based approach in environmental law. Although not advocating either extreme, Dean Huffman proffered a middle ground represented by the use of such market mechanisms as tradable emission permits. Following his talk, students pursued a number of questions regarding the practical consequences of his approach. The Federalist Society and the University of Colorado thank Dean Huffman for his visit.
