This CLE, hosted by the CBA Immigration and Juvenile Law Sections, will cover: Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, including: how to identify eligible children in your work & practice; how and when to obtain the requisite Colorado State court order; the benefits of an approved SIJS petition before USCIS (immigration); and the current obstacles to obtaining SIJS and lawful permanent residency through an approved SIJS petition. Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC), including: who is a UAC?; the benefits of being a UAC; current obstacles UACs face in removal (deportation) proceedings. Other options available to children, including: a quick overview of other potential pathways to status available to children and how to identify eligibility (acquired or derived citizenship, VAWA, U visas, asylum). What about the parents? This CLE will also cover: the impact dependency & neglect proceedings may have on undocumented parents; locating a parent who has been detained or deported by ICE; working with parents who are detained or deported; educating parents and children on their Constitutional rights in encounters with Immigration & Customs Enforcement; how to safety plan with your clients.
