Join Colorado Law for the 61st Annual John R. Coen Lecture "A Question about the State of Our Union: Is the Rule of Law Strong?" on Thursday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m. in Wittemyer Courtroom. We are pleased to welcome Mr. Gregory B. Craig, former White House Counsel, and Of Counsel, Litigation, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates for this lecture.

Throughout his life, Mr. Craig has witnessed Americans lecture others about the importance of the rule of law--to develop strong democratic institutions, to promote economic development, and to secure basic human freedoms. However, we as a nation have never fully acknowledged our own shortcomings in the rule-of-law department, and most historians will tell you that maintaining the rule of law in the United States has always been a struggle. How can that be true in a country that was founded on a written constitution and an ironclad bill of rights? How can that be true in a country that, over 230 years of its history, has established a truly independent judiciary that has always been careful to protect its own independence? The answer should come as no surprise: there are always powerful individuals and interests who believe they will benefit if they are able to evade, avoid, or weaken the rule of law, and this is true today. It is important to identify those who seek to weaken the rule of law in the United States, to anticipate the assaults that will likely occur, and to address the strategies that will be deployed to achieve those ends. In this lecture, Mr. Craig will contribute to this discussion, and explore the legal implications that result when the rule of law is not maintained.

Approved for one (1) general CLE credit.

Registration for the Coen Lecture is now closed. However, we welcome your attendance at this event! Please check-in upon arrival. Thank you for your interest in Colorado Law events!
