Bio:
Over the course of his 30-year career, Pete Anderson has played a variety for roles in the enforcement and compliance arena, which continued to help him in his current consulting and teaching roles:
First, after his federal clerkship, he was a Trial Attorney in the Environmental Crimes Section of the U.S. Department of Justice. Then, he broadened his federal prosecutorial experience by serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in Charlotte, North Carolina (W.D.N.C.).
Next, after leaving government service, Pete spent the next two decades building a unique private practice that balanced his passions for trial advocacy and reactive defense, along with his commitment to promote proactive compliance counseling and to help companies design and implement effective corporate compliance programs. The dual goals of his counseling were to help companies and executives understand the "spears" and "think like a regulator/prosecutor," as well as how to develop effective "shields" and engage in meaningful "self-governance." During that period, Pete also had the privilege of serving as a key environmental compliance leader on the Volkswagen Diesel Court Appointed Monitoring Team.
In the most recent phase of his career, Pete served as the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer for Carnival Corporation & plc, ("Carnival Corp."), which is one of the largest cruise lines in the world, comprised of nine different brands, that operate over 90 ships, and employs over 150,000 employees from all over the globe. Aligned with the risk- profile, the E&C Program priorities included environmental; health, safety and security; as well as general compliance topics. The Team also included leaders in the critical areas of Investigations, Compliance Risk, Compliance Training and Compliance Communications. During his tenure at Carnival Corp., Pete also sat on the Executive Leadership Team; oversaw the global Ethics & Compliance Program; and guided the Company through its Probation and Court-Appointed Monitorship.
Pete holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University (summa cum laude) and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He regularly speaks, writes and teaches on a variety of topics, including corporate compliance and ethics, environmental crimes, environmental law, corporate governance, and risk management. Pete is also currently an adjunct law/compliance professor at the University of Colorado/Boulder, and Loyola University Chicago.
Pete can be reached at the email address above as well as pa@houseofdefense.com.
