General Description:
This course examines how law addresses difficult and contested questions in medicine and the life sciences. Students explore how core bioethical principles interact with legal doctrine in areas such as informed consent, human subjects research, new biotechnologies, reproductive choice, end-of-life decisions, the definition of death, allocation of scarce medical resources, and access to health care. By analyzing legal cases and bioethical writing, students develop skills in constructing and evaluating arguments from multiple stakeholder perspectives. 2 credits, letter graded.
