From anti-masking laws that prevent Ku Klux Klan members from wearing masks to membership laws forcing the NAACP to disclose its roles, the First Amendment has played an important but overlooked role in governing privacy at its intersection with association and speech. On Monday, March 28, Jeff Kosseff, Associate Professor of Cybersecurity Law at the United States Naval Academy, will deliver a public lecture discussing his new book, The United States of Anonymous, focusing on the First Amendment’s protection of anonymity. Prof. Kosseff will discuss his extensive interviews with key figures in high-profile anonymity cases as well as with a wide range of people who have benefitted and been harmed by anonymous communications. Prof. Kosseff will discuss key legal developments and the role of technology in intermediating, protecting, and breaking anonymity.
