Come learn about a new course for 2017-18! In this new course, students will learn through a project-oriented conversation between legal experts and education policy experts. The basic structure of the course will revolve around small working groups, each consisting of attorneys, law students, and Ph.D. students. One working group might, for example, explore approaches regarding students with special needs; another might focus on English Learner or LGBTQ students; another might focus on teacher accountability approaches – all depending on the issue areas that attorneys and students want to explore. One product of all this might be well-crafted, thoughtful litigation projects; another might be model legislation; another might be a report or article. Describing the course and discussing it with you at this session will be Professor Kevin Welner, author of West’s “Education and the Law” casebook, and Kathy Gebhardt, director of Children’s Voices and BVSD School Board member.
