Being the first to go to college is not easy. Some, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or even our hometown/community, are the first in our family and, often our community, to go to law school (or undergraduate school). There was no one who had already gone ahead, knew the ropes, could give you tips about how to study, or could explain what has confused you. Having family and community support makes a big difference in the level of confidence we have when we make that big step to go to college or law school. Some feel very isolated. Others struggle because they are not sure where to turn when they are confused or having difficulty comprehending course information, but, they fear revealing their vulnerability to others around them in class or in the halls. Exactly what have these individual students had to face? How are they coping and rising above this challenge? What can you learn from these students?
