Big data is changing the way companies interact with their customers. Old notions of information privacy are being challenged and cast aside. Facebook uses user data to perform “emotional contagion” studies. Target knows when you are pregnant. Are these trends merely the next evolution of market research, or the death of privacy as we know it? Silicon Flatirons is hosting a conference to explore the ethical implications of corporate efforts to learn more about consumers through data gathering techniques that are intrusive and controversial. Get up to speed on the issues before the conference at the Silicon Flatirons Student Group’s conference primer lunch featuring Prof. Paul Ohm. Prof. Ohm will survey the issues that will be discussed at the conference, which begins on Thursday, December 4th. Lunch will be served.
