Everyone has biases. Unconscious biases often conflicts with our conscious beliefs. We make snap judgments and decisions that we do not even think about because our minds rely on shortcuts, and we do not even know this is happening, unless we stop, pause and think about it. There are many types of biases, including, but not certainly limited to, bias for; bias against; in-group bias; and confirmation bias. We can even be biased about “talking about bias” because we believe it will be uncomfortable. Even when we are well intentioned, we still don'’t know what we don'’tnow.
The exciting and transformative benefit of digging deeper and delving into seeing and understanding unconscious bias -– what it is, and how it shows up - is that we gain a greater understanding of how it can impact behaviors, decisions and outcomes.
