Interested in law and decision making? Reid Hastie, a former professor of psychology here at CU and a current Professor of behavioral science from the University of Chicago is coming to speak here at the University of Colorado Law School. Professor Hastie is an expert on jury decision-making and has studied subjects as varied as punitive damages in civil cases and the effects of death-qualification on juries in capital cases. He is a co-author on Inside the Jury, a book that has influenced many trial attorneys as it explains how juries assimilate evidence at trial. Professor Hastie applies his research findings to legal policy and consults attorneys in both criminal and civil cases. He will talk about some of these applications, including testifying as an expert at trial, testifying in appellate hearings, and assisting attorneys in constructing arguments, selecting jurors, and writing motions to argue for change of venue, special instructions, and so forth. The presentation will be very informal and Mr. Hastie will be glad to let the audience guide the direction of the talk through questions. Please join us for what promises to be an interesting and informative guest lecture on human behavior and the law. Room 205 at 12 pm Monday Nov. 9th. Lunch will be provided.
